Understanding and Preventing Suicide Risk Among Students: Early Identification, Risk Assessment and Intervention

Every student has aspirations for the future, yet some experience overwhelming academic stress, anxiety, depression, interpersonal difficulties, family pressures, hopelessness, and other life challenges. For a vulnerable young person, the accumulation of these difficulties may contribute to suicidal thoughts, intent, self-harm, and, in some cases, suicide. Suicide among students is therefore not only an individual tragedy but an important public-health and educational concern requiring systematic prevention. This research project focuses on understanding, identifying, and monitoring suicide risk among young people aged 14–20 years. It will examine suicidal ideation and intent together with psychological distress, mental health needs, risk factors, stressful situations, and protective factors. A major objective is to develop and validate a new suicide-risk assessment scale that can assist in identifying individuals who may be vulnerable before a crisis occurs. Participants will be studied across defined groups, with follow-up assessment to examine how suicide risk and associated mental health factors change over time. The project moves beyond simply asking whether a student has suicidal thoughts. It seeks to understand the pathway from vulnerability → psychological distress → suicidal ideation → suicidal intent → risk of self-harm, while also examining factors that may protect an individual. Participant safety is central to the study. Any participant showing significant distress, suicidal ideation, self-harm thoughts, or imminent risk will receive immediate support, clinical assessment, and referral according to a predefined risk-management protocol, including access to 24×7 emergency assessment when required. The ultimate goal is to establish an evidence-based framework of early identification, monitoring, timely intervention, and suicide prevention among young people.

Journey of the project: Integrated-Digital Platform for mental helath

The Project and Its Journey The journey of RELIEF (Responsive Ecosystem for Lifelong Emotional Intervention, Facilitation and Transformation) began with a simple but important observation: although mental health problems among students and young people are increasing rapidly, most individuals are identified only after they develop significant psychological distress or psychiatric illness. Existing services are largely reactive, fragmented, and unable to provide timely, preventive, and population-based care. Drawing upon more than four decades of experience in psychiatry, academic research, teaching, and mental health service development, Dr.Amresh Shrivastava envisioned an integrated digital platform that could transform the way mental healthcare is delivered. The objective was to move beyond diagnosis and treatment towards early detection, prevention, resilience building, and personalized intervention. The first step in this journey was the development of MASS™ (Mental Health Assessment Scale for Students)—a culturally appropriate, multidimensional psychodiagnostic assessment system designed specifically for Indian students. The instrument was developed through a rigorous scientific process involving literature review, expert consultation, pilot testing, psychometric validation, and clinical validation. The validation programme involved more than 1,000 participants, including university students and psychiatric patients, and demonstrated excellent reliability, validity, and diagnostic accuracy. The findings have been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Building upon this scientific foundation, RELIEF evolved into a comprehensive digital mental health ecosystem. Today, the platform integrates scientifically validated screening, AI-assisted counselling, guided referral pathways, psychiatric consultation, wellness programmes, home-based follow-up, and longitudinal monitoring within a single digital framework. Designed as a scalable Software as a Medical Device (SaMD), RELIEF supports preventive mental healthcare across educational institutions, workplaces, and communities. The project has been developed by a multidisciplinary team comprising experienced psychiatrists, psychologists, researchers, public health professionals, and software engineers. It aligns with India's vision for digital healthcare, including the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), and is being prepared for integration with tele-counselling, telepsychiatry, and digital health services. Today, RELIEF represents years of scientific research, clinical experience, technological innovation, and collaborative effort. As an innovation-driven HealthTech startup, our mission is to make evidence-based, accessible, and affordable preventive mental healthcare available to every student, institution, workplace, and community. We believe that the future of mental healthcare lies not only in treating illness but also in identifying vulnerability early, strengthening resilience, and promoting lifelong mental well-being.
